Study Abroad Scholarship
I received this for studying Business Writing and Italian Language in Florence, Italy for 6 weeks. The amount was $500. Summer 2005.
7. Skills
Leadership:
Participating in Purdue’s All-American Marching Band for 2 years has given me leadership skills. I have to be able to maintain my marching and playing skills every year to make it in the band every year and also be able to be a role model for incoming freshman every year.
Also, I am an Office Head in the Records and Recruitment Office, this shows leadership because I am not only in charge of people who work for the office, but I also have to help the over 1,000 other people in the bands program and the incoming freshmen every year interested in participating.
Working with others:
Again, marching band shows I can work well with others, I have to be able to work with 360 other people at one time to put together a different show every week.
Also, in my current job I have two co-workers who I need to collaborate with to be able to get sales goals met, help students and faculty, and create new ways to promote Apple.
Time Management:
I have very good time management, I am in three bands, I have a job, and I take a full load of classes and maintain good grades, not to mention clubs. This is something most people don’t learn until their Junior year of college but I was forced to learn very quickly because of all of the activities I am involved in.
Communication:
I am a “go getter.” I will not hesitate to talk to people I need to talk to. Or go get what needs to be done. I believe I communicate effectively with my audience at all times to get everything done as quickly as possible with the best possible results. I like to think I also put the people I talk to at ease, because I am a very approachable, hands on person.
7. Who can I work with?
I like to say I can work with anyone, but ideally I like working with motivated people like myself. Someone who wants the same goals and who isn’t there just for the paycheck, but is there for the reward of doing a good job.
8. Languages
I have taken 6 years of Spanish, and can speak it fairly well.
And I am currently learning Italian.

My job:
Link = http://www.bookjobs.com/viewinternship.php?prmCoID=28
I am applying for the Fall Publicity Intern at Brookings Institution Press. I think this job will keep me on my toes and will also make me think in a professional way. I will be marketing for books, libraries, professors, etc, as it says in the job description. I will be able to create marketing materials, track reviews, and respond to press. This is such an upbeat job, why is it an internship? It is located in Washington, DC and they are looking for people with an English background.
Why do I want this job? Well, not only does it sound like a ton of fun, and it is not in Indiana. I also was looking for a job that was in the marketing field as well as in writing. I wanted to be able to use my major which I have been working very hard at, but, I have also been working very hard at my random jobs, which I love. I have usually happened into sales, and have done really well at them. At American Eagle, I was the top seller for 4 weeks in a row. And in Apple, we are improving the individual sales at Purdue every day. I knew I couldn’t give up the fast paced part of my life, which has become sales and marketing. I also know I can make myself have short-term goals with crunch time. I like adrenaline with what I do and that makes everything worth while.

Dear Uwi Basaninyenzi:
I am currently a sophomore at Purdue University and majoring in Professional Writing with a minor in Law and Society. I am applying for the position of Fall Publicity Intern in Washington, DC. I located the position on the website www.bookjobs.com. I have enclosed my resume and I believe that all of my experiences have prepared me for the internship with your company. I am excited about this position because I hope in the future I can attain a position in the publishing industry with marketing in the title.
For the past two years I have discovered I have had a knack for sales and marketing. It started in High School when I was working at a small local restaurant. I tried to sell people on our special, drew people in and greeted everyone, making sure I memorized everyone’s name. Then After my freshman year of college I had two jobs just in floor sales at JCPenny and American Eagle, and at American Eagle I was top sales person for 4 weeks in a row. And now I work for Apple Computer, I am a Campus Representative and am working on individual sales. I am able to create marketing material and manage demonstration tables and even more! It is the most fun I’ve had at a job in my whole life.
I am organized, enthusiastic, and motivated. I also have extensive skills with computer programs as well as other platforms as you can see on my resume. In addition to all of my skills I am polite and calm when it comes to stressful situations. I want to benefit your company and learn from my experiences there.
Please contact me at 765.430.2613. Or email me at larmenta@purdue.edu I look forward to speaking with you. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Lauren Armenta
