The above courses have provided me with a well-rounded background in liberal arts, with specific emphasis on rhetorical advocacy as well as written and oral communication. Given the opportunity, these courses will prove to have prepared me to function in any number of business settings. In particular, they have allowed me to be considered a capable and confident public speaker and writer. I believe that my specialization in the field of communication has allowed me to develop skills I had naturally as a speaker and orator, and use my strengths to lead me into a career that I am especially well prepared for.

Noteworthy Skills

I am a firm believer in the power of the spoken word. Throughout the course of my lifetime I’ve been able to sway the opinions of others (particularly those who are older and in positions of authority), and speak on behalf of myself and my peers with confidence and poise. Until college, this was not a skill I made a point to develop with any sort of practice, it was something I merely possessed.

In addition to my verbal skills, I have a proven ability to managed several important responsibilities at once. For instance, during my sophomore year of college I took on an internship requiring an average of 20 hours of work per week, joined a fraternity, an became the treasurer of my university’s chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America. Still, my cumulative grade point average remains at 3.3.

Technical Skills

One of the benefits of my internships, is that I am proficient in several different computer programs. I am capable of producing material in Adobe Page Maker, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point.

Closely related to my work with Page Maker is my ability to write according to AP-stylebook regulations for media and other sources. I have published several press releases for any number of Purdue sports teams including previews, recaps, and feature pieces.

I worked closely with Purdue Sports Information Assistant Direction Chris Macaluso to produce the media guide for the 2005 NCAA Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships.
